I, Dr Harshita Sharma, studied Bachelor of Dental Surgery (2010-2015) and Master of Dental Surgery, in Periodontology and Oral Implantology, (2017-2020) from Rajasthan University of Health and Sciences. I have worked as an associate and general dental surgeon for five years, along with post-graduation. I have been working as a consultant Periodontist and Implantologist for past three years.

Gum Diseases, Also Known As Periodontal Diseases, Are A Group Of Conditions That Affect The Tissues Surrounding And Supporting The Teeth. These Diseases Range From Mild Inflammation Of The Gums (Gingivitis) To More Severe Infections That Can Lead To Tooth Loss And Damage To The Bone Supporting The Teeth (Periodontitis).
The Main Cause Of Gum Diseases Is The Accumulation Of Plaque, A Sticky Film Of Bacteria That Forms On The Teeth. When should you visit a periodontist
Apart from dental pain, here are some of the symptoms which indicate the need to consult a periodontist.
Bleeding Gums
If you happen to notice bleeding while brushing or biting food, do not take it lightly and book an appointment!
Gum Recession
If your gums have been displaced or receded from its original position, it's a sign of Periodontal disease.
Tartar (Calculus) deposition with foul breath
If there is tartar deposition (Yellow/Green/Brown deposits over teeth and around gums), it is an indication of the development of periodontal diseases, like Periodontitis (Pyorrhoea).
Loose or Missing Teeth
In severe cases of Periodontitis, teeth become loose due to attachment loss and even fall out. To save such teeth and replace missing ones, Periodontist should be contacted on an urgent basis.
